During their 25th Summit Racing Nationals presented by PPG, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association crowned their 2023 PPG Street Machine of the Year. It’s the ’67 Mustang fastback built at Ironworks Speed & Kustom of Bakersfield, California, for Danny Shaffer. Ironworks incorporated computer-aided design technology, 3-D printing, and CNC machining throughout the build.

The Mustang body features widened fender flares, quarter-panel scoops, custom fastback roof vents, and 3-D–printed rocker panel moldings. The rear bumper has been narrowed for a flush fit, the pot metal taillight housings replaced with machined examples, and there’s a custom billet lower valence framing the exhaust tips and finishing off the rear.

Underhood is a supercharged 5.4L V-8 driveline from a late-model Ford G.T. 500 Mustang and the interior follows suit with cutting-edge styling and function with even more CAD-designed one-off components, including the door pulls, center console pieces, and the dash that is filled with advanced digital gauges. All the design elements, details, and processes come together in a way that honors the Mustang legacy, while still giving it a unique modern twist.

We had a little issue with a specific calculator recently that resulted in yielding the World’s Biggest Hemi. Well, to be more specific, it was our fearless tech guru, the master of disaster, the sultan of the calculator Ron Ceridono was just a bit off. Turns out only he knows of a 3,500ci Dodge Hemi. We decided to let the ol’ wise one work his way out of this with the following explanation:

“During the ’50s, Chrysler Corporation’s Dodge division offered a variety of Hemis to power their cars; 241-, 270-, 315-, 325ci engines were all produced. There were reported to be ’56 Dodge D-501s built in 1957 equipped with 354ci Chrysler Hemis, and some Dodge trucks used 331- and 354ci Chrysler Hemis. However, little is known about the 3,500ci Dodge Hemi that powers Jack Chisenhall’s 2023 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster trophy winner. We introduced this one-of-a kind Hemi in the May issue of Modern Rodding.

“Since we revealed this amazing powerplant some have speculated the engine uses a space-age plastic composite block that expands with heat, allowing the bore sizes to expand dramatically. Others suggest the stroke of the unique rubber crankshaft grows with engine rpm, resulting in a substantial increase in displacement.

“Of course, there is another possibility that explains this amazing discovery. Could it be the engine started out as a 325ci Dodge D-500, was bored 0.060-inch oversize to 3.751 inches, the crankshaft’s rod journals were offset ground, increasing the stroke to 4 inches, which resulted in 354 ci? (OK, you caught us again, that would be 353.6 ci). Or is it possible that an editor with fingers more suited to wrenches than a keyboard made a colossal typo? We may never know for sure if the 3,500ci Hemi exists, and Chisenhall isn’t talking.”
